Interesting on the bottom. I think it has to be lens.

    I concur, definitely a #lens

I get'a see this one in the quick dashboard...wow!

!!! 😃 Never seen anything like this before! What do you think is going on? Can you describe what you saw, @falconusa1?

PS. You might want to start a science discussion on this, so that you can write more! Great object, deserves more words 😃

Looks like a nice Einstein Ring lens or a ring galaxy!! All the other yellow galaxies are closely aligned in projection with the candidate..

  • Tom_Collett by Tom_Collett scientist

Cool! But the other yellow objects look brighter, so are probably more massive than the 'lens'. Why aren't they perturbing the ring?

A good example of quantum mechanics at work in nature... possible another aligned #galaxy is lens also! I been trying to find this one.

    looks like lens plus?

I would have dismissed this just a strange image. Very interesting.

I love this image but I just don't understand it.

    It's an #einstein ring

I hope so, but it's just too perfect for a lens in the centre of a group.

looking at each filter image spacewarps.org.s3.amazonaws.com/subjects/raw/CFHTLS_006_0783_u.fits.fz
    there is no visible ring.

could be an artifact of image processing in stacking different stretch of g and i filters images?

    Posted

  • Tom_Collett by Tom_Collett scientist

possible, if the point spread function of the g image was much larger than for the r and i image.

    Posted

  • Tom_Collett by Tom_Collett scientist

but then you'd expect a blue ring around the other yellow galaxies too...

  • c_cld by c_cld

did you open the filters files? the psf in g-band is what you said. More it's the only object seen in u-band.

Looks like a perfect rendition of Einstein's Ring.

just got this one - consensus was a star?

  • Capella05 by Capella05 moderator

Yes. Definitely not lensing, but until we get better spectra on the object we cannot rule out the possibility it may be a quasar.

  • HelPer2 by HelPer2

I'm marking it in "Refine", it's too interesting to pass by!

    Posted

  • ElisabethB by ElisabethB moderator

Please don't mark it because it is special. Only mark things in Refine if you think it is a lens.
