Modelling the CFHTLS-SW candidates

  • psaha by psaha scientist

The list of candidates discovered by the Spacewarps community is now out: http://arxiv.org/abs/1504.05587

And so is the new improved SpaghettiLens http://labs.spacewarps.org/spaghetti/ thanks to @rafael_kueng who single-handedly vanquished the computer, the network and all other evil things around!

Edited to add: I am so excited we are modelling again 😃 😃 😃

As with all our modelling attempts can you:

    • Only have a single model in a post.
    • List the parent of the model (if applicable)
    • The ID of the model you have just generated
    • The changes you have made to the model
    • The results of your changes.
    • Thoughts for improvement.

    For Example:

    • SW ID - The Spacewarps ID of the candidate
    • Parent - 4516
    • Revised Model - 4568
    • Action - Moved the minima to the NE of the galaxy and added a mass point.
    • Result - The arc is more clearly defined from 7 to 11:30, not too happy about the predicted counter image at 2:45
    • Thoughts - Perhaps a cleaner mass distribution?

And a template - amend where necessary! Just copy and paste 😃

     - ***SW ID*** - insert text here
     - ***Parent*** - insert text here
     - ***Revised Model*** - insert text here
     - ***Action*** - insert text here
     - ***Result*** - insert text here
     - ***Thoughts*** - insert text here

@Els I don't know how you succeed to load this image, because I already modeled it at http://labs.spacewarps.org/spaghetti/model/CCZG2QBCV3: when I try to start a model from an ASW id, I got an error from Spaghettilens "OUuups, that should not pappen(sic).. Please inform Rafa what you did!"

#SW53: Anyway I suggest that you look at the object in "Tools" http://tools.zooniverse.org/#/dashboards/spacewarp/5541168ea3514c519500025d or in Aladin filters to find a very different case of your model.

There is not need to put 2 saddles and 2 minima, and I think your saddle is misplaced as it should be the right fainter counter image of the left brightest blue blob/arc . (I reviewed Rafa's paper on the mistakes we made for sims).

Modeling could be a demanding and painstaking work but it's worth to progress on this sample of candidates 😃

That has already been raised on Github (along with several other issues), go to the Spaghettilens repository to see Rafi's responses.

There are no correct or incorrect models - each of us can model the candidates as we see fit, and make changes. Sometimes the changes will improve the model and sometimes it won't 😃 Sometimes we might feel like trying something different, that will result in a horrible model. We may choose to post it, to show the others what to avoid.

Can we please try to avoid negative language like 'incorrect' 'wrong' 'do this instead' - and rather try positive enforcement like 'If you tried moving the saddlepoint to x, you might get a better y'.

The only reason I am asking is that we will be training other modellers, and I do not want to scare them off by any perceived negativity, or for them to think that they have no freedom in how they choose to model. 😃

This is not geared towards anyone in particular, but we have to start thinking about the future and how to attract more modellers 😃

This system is a difficult one, but the model looks definitely on the right track!

Interpreting the model, we have a main lensing galaxy and a perturbing galaxy; the perturbing galaxy is probably more massive than the main lensing galaxy, but still, it does not dominate because it's not as close (in projection) to the source. The perturbing galaxy is approximated by a point mass, which is not ideal, but the best we can do with the current capabilities SpaghettiLens.

In such situations you expect the arrival-time contours, and by extension the arcs, to be squashed away from the perturber. The model shows just that, which is good.

    • Thoughts - I have gone in a rather radical direction from my previous models for this candidate. I do not think the lower right brighter blue 'arc' is connected, but rather foreground star/s (having said that - there could well be an arc obscured behind!). Next I am going to try inserting a second saddle point to see if it will improve or degrade the model.
