Space Warps Talk

Is there anything that changes once you pass 50000 image classifications?

Is there anything that changes in the software?

    What changes did you see?

I no longer get any simulations! I am at 52803 now.

Don't change it, I like it like this

**EDIT was just a joke, I don't like it like this

I have not seen any in over 2000, at 53087 now, like it like this, but it is probably some glitch.

    I just got this message

    Fantastic work guys!

Anyone interested in modelling the candidates while the dataset catches up? We can have a hangout to discuss this.

  • JasonJason by JasonJason

Yes, what do we have to do?

Oops, JJ, spoke too soon. I'm at 53134 and no sims for past 1000 odd.

@psaha What is involved with candidate modelling. Will it be as rewarding as I suspect?

I don't know, did you get the run out of subjects message box? There have been two moderators on and have not responded to say what is going on here?

Great, let's have a hangout to discuss lens modelling!

All interested modellers welcome, please enter possible times on this doodle. Please read tImes as UTC! Will message you hangout details.

What is happening with the message box and no simulations?

  • psaha by psaha scientist

Candidate modelling, would mean constructing (in software) a simple source and lens that reproduces the appearance of a candidate lens. There are several ways of doing this. LensToy is a very simple one, where the lens is fixed but one can play with different placements of the source. Other examples are LensA, written by @gumbosea and Mowgli and SpaghettiLens.

If one finds a good model for a candidate at this stage, that would strengthen the case that it is a lens and motivate follow-up observations. It would also provide some information on the mass, presence of dark matter and so on. At this stage, models would be very preliminary, but still pretty exciting.

@psaha Sorry, I am in Australia so will be asleep from 4 - 9 PM your local time (UTC). Still no subjects also.

Let's hangout at 18.00 UTC to talk about lens models -- @JasonJason and @rafael_kueng and I will be there. Please post here if you'd like to join.

I don't know any more yet about the message box and the stopped sims, sorry.

No more doubles, thanks. Will try.

@psaha do we need to be good at math? If so may be a problem here?

  • psaha by psaha scientist

    No algebra/calculus needed, just geometry!

3 of the 4 moderators also have full time jobs, so unless it is something urgent, we will only periodically check 'Talk' during working hours.

The problem with the disappearing sims was already reported at least 10 days ago, and we are waiting for feedback from the developers. As for the pop-up message, it is possible they were doing maintenance during that time period.

Should it occur again, update your post in the 'Help - Bug' board. I know the developers do check out that board - they do not necessarily read the posts in the 'Science Board'.

    Back over to psaha 😃

Edited to add: your thread has been merged with the existing thread (we need to keep all the reports together for the developers)
