I am wondering why these images are such low quality? Are they originaly just a small pieces of a bigger image or?

Yes they are indeed smaller pieces of much larger images. I'll let the developers chip in with some more technical info....

Low quality is relative. If you are comparing to Hubble images, they indeed have poor resolution and are affected by distortions through atmosphere. These images are taken with Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope located in Hawaii, one of the best sites for doing astronomy observations.

You are right, these images are smaller cutouts of a larger image but they are not stretched in any way to affect the image quality/appearance. The original image is ~19300 pixels across and the smaller cutouts you see are 440 pix across. cheers!
